Something completely different

With Hedgy, launched this morning into the upper reaches of a tributary of the lower Hawkesbury, with a view to getting up to the fresh to look for bass. Unlike the other tributaries of the river that I have fished, this creek is quite similar to Middle Harbour Ck - plenty of mullet and tiny bream but no sign of anything else. We spent a lot of time in the brackish water with Dave scoring a silver biddy and a small bream and seeing a flathead launch out of the water after his lure.

We tired of that so paddled up to the saltwater limit, marked by a rockbar. We left the yaks on the rocks and gingerly made our way upstream looking for a decent pool to cast into. Got to a pool and I had first cast into it. Got a decent hit and saw a small bass following. Dave and I had a couple of gos then he came up tight and landed a small bass. Mission accomplished.

I put my next cast into an overhanging tree and broke the leader so I set off to retrieve the lure. Found the lure on the tree and couldn't reach it so changed position and couldn't find it again. Searched for ages but couldn't find it. With the path upstream looking difficult and time moving on we decided to return to the yaks. Back to my rod and there in the water next to it was my lure - floating lures can be good.

That was it. Next time I think we'll head straight up to the fresh with a view to getting further upstream. In the meantime, a similar excursion much closer to home is on the cards
