Ignoring the crowd

Date: 2009-11-08
Launch: 5:45am
Next tide: 6:40am Low
Wind: 5-10kt E
Sea: 1m sea on 2m easterly swell
Return: 9:15am
Days since new moon: 20
Water temp: 19.7
Location: Spot A
Catch: Snapper, Trevally

A big turnout at the spot today. Overcast with very light rain, decent swell and a bit of chop provided ideal conditions for catching fish. Add to that some nice warm blue water, northerly current and a baro around 1030 and you'd think it'd be impossible to go home without a smile. Nonetheless, I struggled early. Paddled to a spot away from my normal mark due to errant combo. Set the drift and got the combo working. I was away from all the other craft and getting the odd touch with nothing sticking.

Thought I'd head closer to my normal spot but stayed a bit wide to avoid the traffic. Set another drift for the same result, so moved a bit further in for the next drift. Wasn't long before I was joined by a feisty snapper (40cm fl). A couple of drifts later I pulled in a trevally, again on the power minnow.

Rain was starting to come heavier so I decided to head in. A small king had other ideas when it latched onto the trolled shad. Was only about 55cm though.

Took me a while, but I got my feed and went home with a smile. Others reported loads of rat kings and some bonito and salmon

Good to see a feed Dave.

My launch in a large swell resulted in me getting rolled when I thought I had made it out the back.
A long exhausting swim in, any way third time lucky - then;

A 5 hour paddle out to the island.

A short scenic paddle with my sister turned into a 4 hour epic due to increasing winds and rain

Rain rolled in and I spent the night in the tent in recovery.

Being aware of the paddle in from of me - fishing didn't get a look in.

Still a good swell and fluked it get in - only got rolled in the shore dump.

An amazing island, however, that trip will only every be tried again in ideal conditions.

Wow Dave, sounds like you did it tough. That's why I'm not in a hurry to go up there or to try stay on the island. Camping on the mainland seems a better bet.

How was the camping on the island?
